Learn about Ford F-250 / F-350 / F-450 / F-550 (2011-2016) fuse box and relay’s locations, functions, and maintenance tips for optimal vehicle electrical system.

Every Ford Super Duty truck relies on a network of fuses and relays to keep its electrical system running smoothly. These small but critical components protect your truck’s wiring, lights, power windows, radio, and countless other electrical accessories from short circuits and power surges. Without them, a single electrical fault could cause serious damage throughout the vehicle.

If you own a 2011–2016 Ford F-250, F-350, F-450, or F-550, understanding where your fuse boxes and relays are located can save you time, money, and frustration. Whether you’re dealing with a dead radio, malfunctioning headlights, or a power outlet that suddenly stopped working, the fuse box is usually the first place to check. Knowing exactly where to look—and how to safely access these components—makes troubleshooting far easier.

This guide walks you through the fuse box and relay locations on your Ford Super Duty, along with safety tips and practical advice for identifying and replacing fuses correctly.

WARNING

  • Never replace a fuse with one that has a higher amperage rating.
  • A fuse with a too-high amperage could damage the electrical part and cause a fire.
  • On no account should fuses be repaired (e.g. patched up with tin foil or wire) as this may cause serious damage elsewhere in the electrical circuit or cause a fire.
  • If a fuse blows repeatedly, do not keep replacing it. Instead, have the cause for the repeated short circuit or overload tracked and fixed.
  • Terminal and harness assignments for individual connectors will vary depending on vehicle equipment level, model, and market.

Where Are the Fuse Boxes Located on the Ford Super Duty?

The 2011–2016 Ford F-250, F-350, F-450, and F-550 trucks are equipped with two main fuse box locations: one under the hood and one inside the cabin. Some configurations, especially those with upfitter packages, may include additional relay panels, but the two primary boxes handle the vast majority of the truck’s electrical protection.

1. Engine Compartment Fuse Box (Power Distribution Box)

The primary fuse box is located in the engine bay, positioned near the back corner of the engine compartment, close to the battery. This is often referred to as the Power Distribution Box (PDB).

How to access it:

  • Open the hood and locate the black plastic cover near the firewall, typically on the driver’s side or passenger’s side depending on cab configuration.
  • Unclip or unscrew the retaining tabs holding the cover in place (some models use push-pin clips, others use screw fasteners).
  • Lift the cover straight up to reveal the fuses and relays inside.

This fuse box handles high-amperage components such as the engine cooling fan, headlights, horn, starter relay, and battery-related circuits. Because it’s exposed to heat and moisture, always check that the cover is fully sealed after inspection to prevent corrosion.

2. Instrument Panel Fuse Box (Cabin Fuse Box)

The second major fuse box location is inside the cabin, mounted under the dashboard on the driver’s side.

How to access it:

  • Sit in the driver’s seat and locate the panel to the left of the steering column, near the door.
  • Depending on trim level, you may need to remove a small plastic access panel or kick panel cover. This is usually held by simple clips and can be pulled off by hand or gently pried with a trim tool.
  • Once removed, you’ll see rows of small fuses and a few mini-relays.

This fuse box protects interior electronics like the radio, power windows, dashboard lights, wipers, and climate control system. It’s the one you’ll likely visit most often for troubleshooting everyday electrical issues.

3. Auxiliary Relay Box (If Equipped)

Trucks equipped with upfitter switches, snow plow packages, or heavy-duty trailer tow packages may have an additional relay box mounted near the main engine bay fuse box or along the frame rail near the battery. This box typically houses relays for auxiliary equipment and trailer brake controllers.

If your truck has extra switches on the dashboard for aftermarket equipment, check your owner’s manual or the main under-hood fuse box cover label—it often indicates whether an auxiliary box is present and where it’s mounted.

How to Identify the Right Fuse or Relay

Every fuse box cover includes a printed diagram on the inside of the lid, listing each fuse and relay by number along with its corresponding function. When troubleshooting:

  • Match the fuse number from the diagram to its physical location in the box.
  • Use the diagram to confirm the amperage rating before replacing any fuse.
  • For relays, diagrams typically show the relay’s function (e.g., fuel pump, A/C compressor, horn) and slot position.

If you don’t have access to the printed diagram, referring to your owner’s manual or a verified fuse box diagram for your specific model year and trim is recommended, since amperage ratings and layouts can vary slightly across configurations (especially between F-250, F-350, F-450, and F-550 trims with different electrical packages).

Safety Precautions Before Checking Fuses or Relays

Before opening any fuse box, follow these basic safety steps:

  • Turn off the ignition completely before removing any fuse or relay.
  • For more involved electrical work, disconnect the negative battery terminal to avoid accidental shorts.
  • Use a fuse puller (usually included in the fuse box) rather than metal tools, which can cause sparks or damage the fuse socket.
  • Never replace a fuse with one of a higher amperage rating than specified—this can lead to overheating or fire risk.
  • If a new fuse blows immediately after replacement, stop and inspect the circuit for an underlying short rather than continuing to replace fuses.

Checking and Replacing Fuses in Ford F-250 / F-350 / F-450 / F-550

If electrical components in the vehicle are not working, a fuse may have blown. Blown fuses are identified by a broken wire within the fuse. Check the appropriate fuses before replacing any electrical components. To remove a fuse use the fuse puller tool provided on the fuse panel cover.

Location of Fuse Boxes

ford f-250 / f-350 / f-450 / f-550 (2011-2016): passenger compartment fuse panel location

Passenger Compartment Fuse Panel:

The fuse panel is located in the passenger’s footwell. Remove the panel cover to access the fuses. To remove the fuse panel cover, pull the panel toward you. When the clips of the panel disengage, let the panel fall easily.

ford f-250 / f-350 / f-450 / f-550 (2011-2016): engine compartment fuse box location

Power Distribution Box:

The power distribution box is located in the engine compartment. The power distribution box contains high-current fuses that protect your vehicle’s main electrical systems from overloads.

ford f-250 / f-350 / f-450 / f-550 (2011-2016): upfitter controls

UPFITTER CONTROLS (IF EQUIPPED):

Your vehicle may be equipped with the Upfitter option package which will provide four switches, mounted in the center of the instrument panel, labeled AUX 1, AUX 2, AUX 3 and AUX 4. These switches will only operate while the ignition is in the on position, whether the engine is running or not. It is, however, recommended that the engine remain running to maintain battery charge when using the Upfitter switches for extended duration or higher current draws. (This is even more important for vehicles with diesel engines since the glow plugs are also draining battery power when the ignition key is in the on position.) When switched on by the operator they provide 8 amps, 12 amps or 20 amps of electrical battery power for a variety of personal or commercial uses. If your vehicle is equipped with this option, there will also be a relay box located on the driver side end of the instrument panel. See your authorized dealer for service.

ford f-250 / f-350 / f-450 / f-550 (2011-2016): relay box location

There will also be one power lead for each switch found as a blunt-cut and sealed wire located below the instrument panel and to the left of the steering column.

Conclusion

Knowing the fuse box and relay locations on your 2011–2016 Ford F-250, F-350, F-450, or F-550 is essential for quick, effective troubleshooting. Whether you’re dealing with a blown fuse, a malfunctioning relay, or simply performing routine maintenance, understanding where to look and how to safely access each fuse box, puts you in control of minor electrical repairs.

Always handle fuses and relays carefully, double-check amperage ratings, and use the printed diagrams to confirm you’re working with the correct component. If an electrical issue persists after replacing a fuse, or if you’re uncertain about diagnosing the problem yourself, it’s best to consult a qualified mechanic or Ford dealership technician to avoid further electrical damage.
