Ford Explorer Sport Trac (2001-2005) fuse box and relay Diagrams

Find your Ford Explorer Sport Trac (2001-2005) fuse box and relay locations, functions, diagrams, and maintenance tips for a healthy electrical system.

Your Sport Trac’s power locks quit and the radio went dead on the same rainy morning. Ive seen that exact pairing in the shop and it was just a 20A fuse in the passenger panel. You don’t need to guess or swap relays at random.

This truck has two main fuse centers and they do different jobs. The passenger compartment fuse panel sits on the left end of the dash facing the drivers door, pull the cover straight out. The power distribution box is in the engine compartment by the battery and it holds the high current cartridge fuses and most relays that protect your big systems, Ford’s owner’s manual groups them this way and you can cross check the layout on xerodrive.com.

Below you’ll find year specific diagrams for 2001 through 2005, and yes the assignments change a little each year. A 2004 auto for example leaves positions 4, 8, 12 and 16 empty and blocked by the cover, while a 2001 uses those spots for other circuits. Each table lists the fuse number, amp rating, and what it powers so you can match a dead circuit to the right 5A or 50A fuse without testing every one.

Relays are in that same engine box. You’ll see the PCM relay, fuel pump relay, starter relay, blower relay, horn relay, and the wiper Hi/Lo and Run/Park relays. I keep a cheap test light and a $7 fuse puller in my toolbox, and I reccomend you do the same, a blown fuel pump fuse often throws a crank but no start with no pump hum and sometimes a P0230 code, checking it takes about 10 minutes and a new mini fuse costs a few bucks versus a $150 diagnostic fee if you let a shop chase it.

If a fuse blows once, replace it with the exact same amp and see if it holds. If it pops again don’t keep feeding it fuses, there is a short or overload upstream and you will want a wiring check. For simple stuff like cigar lighter, OBD II port, or radio fuses, DIY is fine. For repeated ABS or PCM fuse failures or any burning smell, get it to a tech quickly, NHTSA notes that overfused circuits can overheat wiring so matching the rating matters (nhtsa.gov).

WARNING

  • Never replace a fuse with one that has a higher amperage rating.
  • A fuse with a too-high amperage could damage the electrical part and cause a fire.
  • On no account should fuses be repaired (e.g. patched up with tin foil or wire) as this may cause serious damage elsewhere in the electrical circuit or cause a fire.
  • If a fuse blows repeatedly, do not keep replacing it. Instead, have the cause for the repeated short circuit or overload tracked and fixed.
  • Terminal and harness assignments for individual connectors will vary depending on vehicle equipment level, model, and market.

Checking and Replacing Fuses in Ford Explorer Sport Trac

If electrical components in the vehicle are not working, a fuse may have blown. Blown fuses are identified by a broken wire within the fuse. Check the appropriate fuses before replacing any electrical components. To remove a fuse use the fuse puller tool provided on the fuse panel cover.

Location of Fuse Boxes

Passenger Compartment Fuse Panel: The fuse panel is located on the left-hand side of the instrument panel facing the driver’s side door. Pull the panel cover outward to access the fuses.
