Learn about Ford F-150 1997-2003 fuse box and relay’s locations, functions, and maintenance tips for optimal vehicle electrical system.
The Ford F-150 from 1997 to 2003 marks the 10th generation of this iconic pickup truck, known for its durability and versatility. During this period, the F-150 is available in several body styles, including the Regular Cab, SuperCab (extended cab), and SuperCrew (crew cab). These options cater to a range of needs, from simple work trucks to family-oriented models, offering ample seating and cargo space. Trim levels range from the basic XL to the high-end Lariat, each equipped with various comfort and convenience features, such as power windows, keyless entry, and upgraded audio systems.
Electrical systems are essential to the F-150’s functionality, with the fuse box and relays playing a central role in protecting and managing these features. The fuse box, located under the dashboard and sometimes in the engine bay, houses fuses for essentials like headlights, wipers, and the radio. Relays, often found near the fuse box, manage high-power components like the fuel pump and starter motor. Regular checks on the fuses and relays ensure these vital functions work smoothly, reducing the risk of sudden electrical failures.

WARNING
- Never replace a fuse with one that has a higher amperage rating.
- A fuse with a too-high amperage could damage the electrical part and cause a fire.
- On no account should fuses be repaired (e.g. patched up with tin foil or wire) as this may cause serious damage elsewhere in the electrical circuit or cause a fire.
- If a fuse blows repeatedly, do not keep replacing it. Instead, have the cause for the repeated short circuit or overload tracked and fixed.
- Terminal and harness assignments for individual connectors will vary depending on vehicle equipment level, model, and market.
Ford F-150 1997-2003 fuse assignment
- The Heated Mirrors, Lower Instrument Panel Power Outlet and Removable Floor Console, when in the front position are fused with self-resetting fuses that are only serviceable by an authorized dealer. The Power Seats are fused by a 30 Amp circuit breaker located under the driver’s seat. The Power Windows are fused by a 25 Amp circuit breaker located under the instrument panel near the steering column. If you experience temporary or permanent loss of these systems, see your authorized dealer for service.
Year of production: from 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003
Location of Fuse Boxes
Passenger compartment fuse panel:
The fuse panel is located below and to the left of the steering wheel by the brake pedal. Remove the panel cover to access the fuses. To remove a fuse use the fuse puller tool provided on the fuse panel cover.
Power distribution box:
1997-1998:
Lift cover towards left of vehicle to access the power distribution box.
1999-2003:
The power distribution box is located in the engine compartment. The power distribution box contains high-current fuses that protect your vehicle’s main electrical systems from overloads.
